Au bas d’un vieux mur qui s’écroule,
Par delà fermes et guérets,
Les cloportes, lents et secrets,
Rampaient, ignorés de la poule.

Je longeais un ruisseau qui coule,
Lorsque j’aperçus les pauvrets
Au bas d’un vieux mur qui s’écroule.
Par delà fermes et guérets.

— Comme ils étaient loin de la foule,
Dans ces gravats mornes et frais !
Je voulus les voir de plus près ;
Mais ils se roulèrent en boule
Au bas d’un vieux mur qui s’écroule.
