Analysis of Le Boudoir

La dame aux cheveux longs et couleur de topaze
Conserve dans sa chambre un magique cercueil
Si fantastiquement vague et fragile à l’œil,
Qu’il a l’air vaporeux comme un voile de gaze,

Ni cierges, ni tréteaux, ni tentures de deuil.
Le portrait dans son cadre et la fleur dans son vase,
Meubles, miroirs, tapis, tout sourit plein d’extase ;
Et pourtant, ce boudoir est gênant pour l’orgueil.

Que le matin y filtre, ou que le soir y tombe,
Il inflige toujours le rappel de la tombe
Et de la pourriture à six pieds dans le sol :

Car la bière fluette exhale par bouffées,
Sourdes comme un écho de plaintes étouffées,
L’odeur cadavéreuse et jaune du phénol.
