Les nuits d’hiver quand le vent pleure,
Se plaint, hurle, siffle et vagit,
On ne sait quel drame surgit
Dans l’homme ainsi qu’en la demeure.

Sa grande musique mineure
Qui, tour à tour, grince et mugit,
Sur toute la pensée agit
Comme une voix intérieure.

Ces cris, cette clameur immense,
Chantent la rage, la démence,
La peur, le crime, le remord...

Et, voluptueux et funèbres,
Accompagnent dans les ténèbres
Les râles d’amour et de mort.
