Analysis of La Lanterne

Maurice Rollinat 1846 (Châteauroux) – 1903 (Ivry-sur-Seine)

Entre la ronce et la caverne
Un curé va pieusement ;
Il porte le saint-sacrement
Au moribond de la taverne.

Devant ses pas une citerne
Ébauche un affreux bâillement :
Entre la ronce et la caverne
Un curé va pieusement.

Mais voilà que dans la nuit terne
Une étoile subitement
Se décroche du firmament,
Et fait l’office de lanterne
Entre la ronce et la caverne.
