Le lys est le plus beau des enfants du zéphire,
Il lève un front superbe et demande l'empire.
Des suaves esprits dans sa coupe formés,
L'air, les eaux, le bocage, au loin sont embaumés.
Sous l'herbe, loin des yeux, plus aimable et moins belle,
La violette fuit. Son parfum la révèle,
Avertit qu'elle est là; que, voulant se cacher
Là, pour le sein qu'on aime, il faut l'aller chercher.

Andre Marie de Chenier

André Marie Chénier was a French poet of Greek and Franco-Levantine origin, associated with the events of the French Revolution of which he was a victim. His sensual, emotive poetry marks him as one of the precursors of the Romantic movement. His career was brought to an abrupt end when he was guillotined for supposed "crimes against the state", just three days before the end of the Reign of Terror.
