Tout le parfait dont le ciel nous honore,
Tout l'imparfait qui naît dessous les cieux,
Tout ce qui paît nos esprits et nos yeux,
Et tout cela qui nos plaisirs dévore :

Tout le malheur qui notre âge dédore,
Tout le bonheur des siècles les plus vieux,
Rome du temps de ses premiers aïeux
Le tenait clos, ainsi qu'une Pandore.

Mais le destin, débrouillant ce chaos,
Où tout le bien et le mal fut endos,
A fait depuis que les vertus divines

Volant au ciel ont laissé les péchés,
Qui jusqu'ici se sont tenus cachés
Sous les monceaux de ces vieilles ruines.
