Que n'ai-je encor la harpe thracienne,
Pour réveiller de l'enfer paresseux
Ces vieux Césars, et les ombres de ceux
Qui ont bâti cette ville ancienne ?

Ou que je n'ai celle amphionienne,
Pour animer d'un accord plus heureux
De ces vieux murs les ossements pierreux,
Et restaurer la gloire ausonienne ?

Pussé-je au moins d'un pinceau plus agile
Sur le patron de quelque grand Virgile
De ces palais les portraits façonner :

J'entreprendrais, vu l'ardeur qui m'allume,
De rebâtir au compas de la plume
Ce que les mains ne peuvent maçonner.
