Que ferai-je, Morel ? Dis-moi, si tu l'entends,
Ferai-je encore ici plus longue demeurance,
Ou si j'irai revoir les campagnes de France,
Quand les neiges fondront au soleil du printemps ?

Si je demeure ici, hélas, je perds mon temps
A me repaître en vain d'une longue espérance :
Et si je veux ailleurs fonder mon assurance,
Je fraude mon labeur du loyer que j'attends.

Mais faut-il vivre ainsi d'une espérance vaine ?
Mais faut-il perdre ainsi bien trois ans de ma peine ?
Je ne bougerai donc. Non, non, je m'en irai.

Je demourrai pourtant, si tu le me conseilles.
Hélas, mon cher Morel, dis-moi que je ferai,
Car je tiens, comme on dit, le loup par les oreilles.
