Mars, vergogneux d'avoir donné tant d'heur
A ses neveux que l'impuissance humaine
Enorgueillie en l'audace romaine
Semblait fouler la céleste grandeur,

Refroidissant cette première ardeur,
Dont le Romain avait l'âme si pleine,
Souffla son feu, et d'une ardente haleine
Vint échauffer la gothique froideur.

Ce peuple adonc, nouveau fils de la Terre,
Dardant partout les foudres de la guerre,
Ces braves murs accabla sous sa main,

Puis se perdit dans le sein de sa mère,
Afin que nul, fût-ce des dieux le père,
Se pût vanter de l'empire romain.
