Analysis of Gold Turns to Brass

Gold Turns to Brass

Running around for hours, my mom tells me it's time for dinner
I reluctantly say goodbye
Forgetting how shy I was when we said hello

I walk up to my porch, you wave as I shut the door

I’m laughing with my brother at the table
Were eating spaghetti with our eyes closed

Mom tells us “don't make a mess”
Soon it's time for bed

Mom comes into my room and sings me a song
My head feels heavy
as I try to listen, I yawn
She sings in whispers and hums on tune
Her voice echoes throughout the room:
“Make new friends and keep the old, one is silver and the others gold”

As I doze off I think of my friends that I'm sure I'll have forever
No matter if we fight
Whos being stupid or smart
It won't matter whos wrong or right
Because we won’t drift apart

3rd grade flew by
Caught up in the wind
We stopped playing till it got dark, even on weekends
We talked just not as frequently
I still waved to you, but sometimes you didn't see

Next fall you moved a few hours away
Even Though we stopped playing I wished that you could stay
I saw your old house was just sold
I remembered when my mom said to keep the old

But After a while the gold will tarnish like faded smiles
Which are silver and which is brass?
Memories of laughing with our backs on the grass

The gold like sunlight broke from the clouds as new friendships begun
since then we’ve lived many circles around the sun
Separated to fast
-As the gold turns to brass

About this poem

This poem is really special to me because it’s about how in my life (and everyone’s) we grow out of friendships and drift apart, this happening to me recently inpspired this poem. This poem was also inspired by the song “Make New Friends and Keep the Old”
