Analysis of Looks

Leigh Reid 2007 (Port Elizabeth)

I have this constant feeling
This feeling to have to look pretty
And feel all glittery
When I just feel jittery
I feel jittery and irritated
Because this is not me
I want to feel free
But society does not let me be

These comments
They hurt bad
But you can’t see how it makes me sad
But I’m glad
I’m glad you cannot see that I’m mad
Because You act like you know everything
When you know nothing
I try to think of something
Something that makes me look at least nice
I try to add a little spice
But you role the dice
And say
“ guess snakes hiss before they bite”
I wish I could get you out of my sight
I stay up late and cry at night
But you don’t know
Until it shows ..

Because this is not me
I want to feel free
Society does not let me breathe
Take a breath of air
And not have these constant stares
Everyone stares at me
While insecurity glares at me
I wish you could see
How I feel
I feel empty
Because then again
This is not me
I want to feel free..

About this poem

This poem was written because of how I felt the world and people viewed me as a poet . I wrote this poem because it was a way of getting things off my chest and throw all my frustration into poetry.
