Analysis of Tae Yins Gaun Hither

Nothing is permanent, all round there's change
Which I cannot slow, sway, suppress or stamp out
And Neil, Alec and Nettie are all gone.
Neil, who sat in his lounge chair peering out
Of his lounge window with silent  wisdom
And big Alec who was a gentle man
Whose quiet wise words you'd wisely listen
And Nettie who knew everyone's business -
And some in village who wished she didn't -
And thus a block of of neighbours are no more
And now I am dumbfounded and dumbstruck
As if my voice is no longer of worth
As I reflect on them as I get drunk
And know I am no longer immortal
That dreaded death shall be my calling too
As the days fly by and my days so few.

What future for the next generation ?
No happy future is to be foretold
But a struggle to pay for their station
A job, clothes, food, goods, kids, fuel for the cold
And they think they are luckier than us
Like previous generations they assume
They're better off than past generations
Not knowing that life was sweet for a time
For a time now gone but which was sublime.
So Neil, Alec and Nettie are all gone
And now it's my turn to go now, for sure
I leave the village and never return
Bur the auld kent faces I shall treasure
As o'er this world  on my own I wander
I walk and weigh over and I wonder
Why are we put on this wild wondrous world ?

An empty house with an empty lounge chair
Tells the tale of what and whom was once there !
