Analysis of Heel of my Fathers Boot

Heel of my Fathers Boot

He wore those boots
All his life in rain,
Sun, soil, snow and sod
His boots stuck him
To the ground
And growing up
I looked around
To stand in his boots
On that ground
Where he stood

Here I tried and tried
To fit them on
But all I could be
Was the mark of a heel
From his boot

From where he stood
I remember
Him being let down
When his boot would
Not fit my ground
And never would I see
Him look at me and try
To pull my boot on

From where I stood
I remember
It was me being let down
But now back I stand
On his ground
From where he stood
And here he now lies
Below the heel of my boot

About this poem

I wrote this poem to reflect on my experience during The Northern Ireland Troubles, a war that lasted 30 years until peace was agreed in 1998 and how we, as the next generation and beyond do not need to follow our forefathers mistakes, but learn and carve out our own peaceful history
