Analysis of Sweet innocence
Regene hamilton 1999 (Jamaica)
Her cover is untouched and her book was unread,
the pages of her book had nothing much to tell
On a shelf as she waits on a hand so loving,
With a beautiful tune on her lip, she was humming
Long had she waited to feel a gentle brush,
but they all seem to grab another amid their rush.
To borrow her book was quite a task
because the person in question would have to write.
Feeling all alone even though she was held up by two other,
Side by side although they really could not bother
As the dust settled over she could not help but want to sneeze
As she prayed for the relief of some cool and gentle summer breeze
She started to lose faith until finally, it had happened
But these hands were nowhere near gentle as she had imagined
Still, she was happy because she was finally being picked
Though the hold he had on her was a little too strict
She could tell by his look that he wasn't that pleased
And he look down at her like he had been deceived
She could tell that he wanted to put her right back
but he snickered at the thought of what he could do with her pages so blank
By the time he was done, it felt like three chapters
and her story so far was of her innocence that was captured
So brutally it was taken now she started to remember
that lonely shelf was nothing but sweet sweet splendor
At one point she wondered if she was a book or a mat
For him to wipe is dirty feet all while calling her fat.
He left her at home to do all the work
While out in the streets he often times lurked.
What he was looking for she knew it too well;
For the girl that he thought could better fill up his well
She wanted to run but where would she go?
So she sat with the pain of the one she loved so
As her leaves started falling and stains soaked her pages
She could not stop the tears that fell down in stages,
Her rugged look her ripped out page
gave her the look of being well over aged
She found out too late for the damage was already done
And her pages that were so crispy clean were already coming undone
When he placed her back down she sat in defeat
For the light in her world, he had managed to deplete
Her cover he had torn, her story he had written
And from her life half of it he had bitten.
