Analysis of Hog Farming Remembered
Doug Blair 1951 (London)
It was Summer and
We were taking traditional
Trip to Danforth Farm.
Mom’s best friend
Had a Brother raising hogs
Three boys and Nadine.
The picnic Wizard.
So much food would
Stuff nine truckers.
Big smiles on their faces.
Now pigs. Bill did it all.
Disposing of dead piglets
Decision for marketing
Slaughter, price timing.
(and city folk think
farmers are slow-witted. Hah.)
After the feast, parents
Cleared for Poker and gaity.
Kids hiked the shimmering
Fields of corn.
Assembled at the pig compound
To whip cobs, like stones
At the livestock.
Specially the big gluttons
Eager for the corn cobs
Who squealed and pushed
Weaker ones to the side
Like freight trains.
Slept all the way home.
We kids did.
