Analysis of Greener Pastures

Hanna Hobbs 2004 (St. Catherine)

When I was younger
things were different,
things were simpler,
things were better,
though the dark presence of life still lingered
The things I did not know
made me burden free.
Like how I did not know the cost of food or
how long it should last,
I did not know how much was left after the bills were paid,
nor did I care for how much light or water to use.

Now the things I know and don't know that had me burden free
now burdens me.
I never really eat now
so last week's food can flow into to next week's.
I always save because the working class
can't money dispose.
I talk to myself to pass the time as to not waste light.
Stink sometimes cause I don't touch the pipes.
It leaks.

I remain humble in mind
and stay in line so that one day blessings will come on time.
Is this the time or is it another attempt
that hopes to hold my heart for a while in contempt.
Should I relent?
or let it slide?
Whilst others walk the road to greener pastures
I walk behind picking the weeds.
In short I make their pastures stay green.
