Analysis of The Vote This Time.
Dodoiyi Deinbo William-West 1964 (Aba)
The Vote This Time.
By Dodoiyi Deinbo William-West.
It’s that season!
Stiff frame bows.
Just like last season!
Pursed lips smiles.
Crash lessons on charisma
Learned.
For my vote.
Somebody.
Now painted angel
Whose past, against
Today’s masses still rebels.
Flamboyance is strategy.
I must vote?
Promises.
Vain. Pleasing the ears,
Not from need
assessment.
Only to grab my vote.
I’ve become wiser
Has he realized?
He who still wants
My vote.
Now franchise-wiser.
Has his sycophants noticed?
Who still angle for
My vote.
See, they’re repackaging
Miserable ‘stomach
infrastructure’,
So they’ll lengthen
The miserable life
They administered.
After my vote.
Compatriots!
Come, let’s trot
In unison,
Knocking down
Our past naivety –
In wrong voting,
In fence sitting –
To kick out
This serial election leech
Who leached our commonwealth
To amass
Illegal wealth
With our legal votes…
Your legal vote.
My legal vote.
Our votes
Now for country’s
Real illustrious attainments!
Yes. Your vote!
Of course. My vote!

About this poem
"The Vote This Time" was inspired by the poet's commitment to work with like-minded Nigerians to reverse the unhealthy rising trend of voter apathy in future state and federal elections in Nigeria. The poem focuses on the twin problem of the use of 'stomach infrastructure' by unscrupulous politicians to "buy votes" on one hand and their efforts to keep other voters away from polling points by making voters think their votes won't count on the other.
