Analysis of Monsters

M Sierra 1988 (USA)

when I’m good, I’m very good.
but when I’m bad I’m better,
I make myself behave, because they say I should,
but after a while, my wild begins to fester,
like an animal in a cage, it eventually grows tired,
of being tamed, and stuck contained, behind those walls of wires.

my monsters crawl outside of that cage,
freeing themselves, one by one,
and once the chains of  good are gone,
they begin to have their fun.

But fun, it never lasts you see,
and soon the monsters will grow bored,
because the good inside of me is so strong, it can never truly be ignored.
the wild inside ,it settles down, but it never stays that way for long.

My  wild side builds up again,
and although my good is strong it lets her, because how can good even know that it should? If I’ve never been bad to need to be better

About this poem

This poem is about my personal struggle with impulsivity. It’s based on me trying to find a healthy balance between living in the moment and acting care free while also thinking things through and making smart and healthy decisions in life. Letting myself understand that’s okay to have fun in life as long as I am responsible.
