Analysis of What If

James K 1982 (Boise)

People say you shouldn’t ‘what if’
What if that happened instead of this
Spending time analyzing the past possibilities
Driving while eyeing the rearview mirror
Picking through the branches of the multiverse
Deciding in retrospect only after the consequence
Which better or best decision we should’ve made

To dwell in the past is to miss the present
They say, don’t regret but remember
Be here now, not burden with past
No future worry, or fear of choice
Like closing your eyes in a storm
No thought for direction or dream
Fully experiencing reality now

But no one arrived halfway without
Traveling a first half of their road
Sometimes a path less taken
Sometimes just picking one
But where we were got us to
Where we are able to see that
The past can be prologue now
