Analysis of A LITTLE INSIGHT

It can happen anytime, night or day,
It can happen during any season.
It can happen, but you don't know why,
You just simply can't find a reason.
You become shrouded in the blackest of veils,
And submerged in your darkest of fears.
It's like a virus without an antidote,
That can last for many years.
It takes every bit of strength you have,
Just to get yourself out of bed.
Wanting to curl up into a ball,
And even wishing that you were dead.
Wearing the same clothes for days at a time,
Not bathing, or brushing your hair.
Not even bothering in eating properly,
Because you really just don't care.
Each day you just go through the motions,
Your positive attitude is simply lost.
Hiding yourself from the outside world,
Avoiding people at any cost.
It's like being in emotional quicksand,
Trying to stop yourself from sinking.
Whilst constantly being bombarded,
By your dark and suicidal thinking.
You learn to wear a happy mask,
In the company of your peers.
Anxiously waiting to get behind closed doors,
So you can just burst into tears.
Even if you manage to find the light,
And, at least, reduce the pain.
Part of you is always waiting,
To be attacked by the darkness again.
You don't want to be a burden on anyone,
So you don't ask for a helping hand.
Unless you have personally experienced depression,
You could never truly understand.
I think that people need to be more in tune,
And society needs to be educated.
Depression can be a such a silent killer,
And should never be underestimated.
You can't  tell just by looking at a person,
What battles they may be fighting inside.
I think awareness concerning mental health,
Should be spread, far and wide.

About this poem

I have been a manic depressive for over 25 years, and this poem is my way of explaining what it is like for me living with depression. It's like a small window to my mind.
