Au fond, la crémaillère avait son croc pendu,
Le foyer scintillait comme une rouge flaque,
Et ses flammes, mordant incessamment la plaque,
Y rongeaient un sujet obscène en fer fondu.

Le feu s'éjouissait sous le manteau tendu
Sur lui, comme l'auvent par-dessus la baraque,
Dont les bibelots clairs, de bois, d'étain, de laque,
Crépitaient moins aux yeux que le brasier tordu.

Les rayons s'échappaient comme un jet d'émeraudes,
Et, ci et là, partout, donnaient des chiquenaudes
De clarté vive aux brocs de verre, aux plats d'émail,

A voir sur tout relief tomber une étincelle,
On eût dit - tant le feu s'émiettait par parcelle -
Qu'on vannait du soleil à travers un vitrail.
