Analysis of Pass Gently

Kristy Deadmond 1972 (United States)

Lord, please take her quietly, but please don't take her soon
Please don't take her far from me, let me see her in the moon

Please make her time remaining as gentle as the breeze
Please provide soft ground to fall when I crumble to my knees

Please give others patience, for I know that I'll have none
Please confine all this anger and give it a different home

Please give me the right words to speak when questions begin to flow
Please give them understanding because these are answers I'll never know

Please shield me from the bitter hearts that aim themselves my way
Please allow us one more moment, allow us many days

About this poem

I wrote this poem while my beautiful daughter was in her last two weeks with us. I was praying that, even though it was imminent, that she would have no pain. She suffered from multiple disabilities her entire life, and at the tender age of 24, her body could take no more. After four months on hospice, she passed gently, gracefully, and without pain.
