Analysis of LOST SOULS IN DISTRESS

Phil Roberts 1957 (Melbourne)

Lost souls in torment
Distress by what life has given them,
And when it seems best to give up
Only the love of their kids has driven them:

Driven them to keep trying
Keep hoping for better times,
Hoping the fiends in Canberra
Might one day change their minds:

Change their minds and start to tax the rich
So they’ll have money to help the poor,
Instead of them begging out in the cold
After Canberra slams the door.

Lost souls in distress
Just hoping for an even break,
But it seems when you’re poor you have to give
But when you’re rich you get to take.

For the Liberal-Labor Party
Has sold out to their rich mates,
And the poor have to beg for scraps
For, to Canberra, they just don’t rate.
