Analysis of Innocent Evolution

Dreary darkness, devoid of light,
violent screaming, endless night.
stormy weather, madness, fright,
feeds the evil ones delight.
Painful squealing, skin is peeling,
clawing, scratching, stomach reeling.
Endless pain, so revealing,
tearing flesh, never healing.
Death is calling, creatures crawling,
blackened soul, forever falling.
Bulbous, pulpy, fleshy sight,
Heedless begging, violent bite.
Endless battle, forever fought,
strain filled screaming, skin pulled taut.

You reach for key for peace is sought
You're almost free, but then you're caught.
Deadly swing of battle axe,
rush of pain, your arm he hacks.
Face grim, you look at him…
He beats you with your severed limb!

Conscious mind, darkens sight,
awaken, terror, utter fright.
Memory of a severed limb,
quickly returns, you awaken to him.
Agony, tormenting, lingering pain,
you think you've gone insane.
You open eyes to see him slowly brandish a blunt cane . . .

Pounding, cracking, breaking bones,
grinding, gloating undertones.
His laughter echoes through the hall,
as willing victims before him fall.
Your bloody, battered, beaten pulp,
he eagerly swallows in one gulp.

Who is this evil demon kind,
who tears into our peace of mind,
Who locks us up, then gives the key,
then tears us up to set us free?

His words echo throughout your head,
through halls of victims that lay dead.
He slowly raises his cane above…
and mutters, “You fool, my name is Love.”

About this poem

A dismally realistic portrayal of love during my youth. I wrote this in-between my chemotherapy and radiation treatments in 1997 while combating a stage 4 Cancer. I would awaken most often in the middle of the night to release my thoughts and emotions in writing. Needless to say; I had a rather dismal view of love due to youthful past and present experiences in love during 1988-1998. The title itself has a hidden meaning; "Evolution" spelled backwards = "noitulove". My youthful mind interpreted it as "no-it-u-love", which was the intended meaning behind the title, "know it, you love". Such is the lesson taught to the innocent in my poem.
