The flight of the Skylark

SR Figgs 1962 (Monterrey)

Beyond the deep chasm, skylark;
far between the two of you,
a profound heart breaking dark
awaits silently, breaking my mystic blue.

Surrender your wings, skylark;
to oblivion the image falls
until you hear a drop: hark!
The gentle tear of my soul calls.

There’s a place in the meadow park
near the well and the golden crown;
don’t stand, spread your wings skylark
conceal your sorrow ‘til dawn.

Away you will be naked and stark
along with many of yours alike;
my warm hands long you here skylark,
go to vast oceans and lands; hike!

Chaste scenes over heavenly orb, skylark;
the dust I breathe won’t diminish your plight,
empower your core, ignite a bright spark,
to arise over many who can't fight the blight.

Don’t return, follow your deliverance in the dusk,
engrave your sweet name in hard bark
so I can return to my place and husk;
empty dreams take the flight, beautiful lark.
