Prosperity and Adversity

Neil McLeod 1947 (Oxford)

Prosperity and Adversity  - for Hiri
In prosperity our friends know us In adversity we know our friends
John Churton Collins

When success fills your coffers,
When prosperity is kind,
And friends all want to know you,
And you don't really mind
When they try to cadge a drink from you
When it should be their shout,
You don't know if they really care
It's there that you have doubt.

But when the wolf is at the door
When adversity is near,
And you are struggling on your own
And you can taste the fear.
It's then you cast your eye around
And see the precious few
Who lend a hand through thick and thin,
And know they're friends with you.
