Journeying

Bird, bird, bird, where flying? Far
Across the ocean? Come with me,
One ring of wings, a mingling flight
And cold thin air and only light
Around us pair, and blue below
And one thin line defining sky and sea,
Then into dark, a mingling of the stars
And deeper blue above and black below,
Until the dawn and half the earth in light,
And then another day and then a night,
And on and on until we see the land,
Another world, an end to journeying,
A furling of the wings and then, serene,
A graceful bending toward the warmth of waiting sand.
