Decay

Derelict Decay

Derelict decay
I stand alone, wedged between two others (survivors?)
Silently watching passers-by as they crawl toward and wander on
Looking through and on, I am a ghost
Chained to past glory of majestic soul
I am trapped. What can I do?
Days go by and I look to the sea
Damp and wet, no one desires to look out for me
I am rotting and ugly, a shadow of what I used to be.
The last light bulb falls as the last leaf of autumn and turns to dust
 Whistling into the merciless wind
 Slowly battering, devouring, swallowing me.
Years surrendered to our time, once
Royal red curtains and music echoing through halls.
 People succumbed to the night
 Twirling and twirling.
Conversation flowed and I became drenched in content
 And colour.
A beam in two flung across the floor
Thick layers of black ash covers me.
Broken glass and the stench of cheap drink
Scarring my forgotten pathways and veins.
No hope, have I. The gate is shut and my fate is set.
Cut from the world I can simply observe
Waiting and waiting but for what?
 There is no preservation
 Through my nails and wood.

Sometimes people look and mutter
They will choose to turn and forget
Disgusted: not a thought, not even a stutter.
When will they see and hear my scouring scream
And through that then learn that it is not only them.
That in the night, I too, can dream.
