A house with Perspective

MJ 2004 (Joplin, Missouri)

I am from a photogenic family
That took pictures every holiday.
I am from a mother who never cooked or cleaned and
A father who spent his life fighting for this country.
I am from the imaginary friend I made up
That played with me when my sisters left.
I am from the mud pies I made with my little brothers
When they lost their joy.
I am from a family that snapped out of their photogenic phase
And fell into a broken one.
I am from the perfect white picket fence
To the one that lost its color and never stood straight.
I am from the embarrassment of people coming into my home
And whispering to their friends on how disgusting it was.

I am from a broken couch
That taught me how to sleep at night.
I am from a dim lamp
That showed me how to keep the room lit up.
I am from a house without electricity
That taught me how to see.
I am from a broken mirror
That showed me flaws are pointless.
I am from a home that broke my heart
But built me a better one.
