Kings of Freedom and Fear

Standing in the middle of the street
Is putting your life into Fate’s hands
Edging the line of living and the end
We are the daring kings of freedom and fear

That night in the street
The sky is as clear crystalline as ice frozen over a pitch-black pool
Hedging our bets at survival
As we sprint down the pavement dashed with yellow stripes and spotted with potholes
Arms outstretched
Two birds about to soar away on a wind
The night behind us could swallow us whole,
With only a flickering street lamp and our hoodies to protect us
Smacking road signs with our palms and throwing rocks
The air smelling crisp and deep and damp
Like applesauce and honeysuckles and wet leaves

When a car rumbles up ahead
Headlights blinding
We stumble to the sidewalk
Laughs cutting the cold air as the noise of spitting gravel fades away
But we are still alive,
Still here
Ruling these dark roadways made of concrete
Together in the street
