The Adopted Son Of Derry
The Adopted Son Of Derry.
An Irish mystic known as Colmcille
Was born in Gartan, county Donegal
But in time became the adopted son
Of Derry on the banks of the Foyle.
A place which in time because of his
Reputation became known as the
Oak Grove where for Jesus he
Daily worked at evangelisation.
He also evangelised the island of
Iona which was another part of
The land of the Celts from where
His reputation grew…
And there is much related to his life
Which brought about renown such
As settling at a convention problems
Relating to the bards of Ireland.
For poets then where a privileged
Profession in fact so strong an
Influence that the Celtic leaders
Sought to end their poetic art.
At Drumceat by the Roe at Limavady
Colm Cille expressed an eloquent
Plea which saved the bards while
Accepting restrictions on their activity.
He was also a bard as history shows
Via one of his poems which includes:
‘For her quietness, for Derry I care,
For the peace that is on her I love her.’
Oh, yes, Colmcille as his name in English
Conveys was a ‘dove of the church’ and
A poet who learned the bardic art from
Gemman the Bard of Leinster.
Oh, yes, (to repeat) Derry was blessed to
Have adopted ‘a dove of the church’!
A Gael of world wide renown and a lover
Of poetic art from the land of O’Donnell.
