Young boy

At fourteen it's no fault of yours
When you're gullible and dumb
Irresponsible and acting out
When you're feeling overwhelmed
If you are sometimes lonely
Peculiarly distant, scared
Feel disconnected, misunderstood
Miserable, worried, mad
Don't frett young lad
You're not insane
Your hormones are to blame

At sixteen, don't be too concerned
When you know not who you are
There are still some fifty year old folk
Who can't recognize themselves
You should concentrate on learning
Be aware that you're still a child
Youth be fleeting as a rushing wind
Embrace yours while you still have time
You're likely to be drawing
Attention to yourself
Might even raise some eyebrows
Intentional or not
Just please remain respectful
Be true to thine own self
And mindful of the potholes
Which life certainly shall provide

At eighteen you might think that now
You're suddenly a man
Well don't fool yourself, regrettably
Your journey only just began
Surround yourself with wisdom
Old folk with tales to tell
Who've traveled a long distance
Been back and forth from hell
They might teach you some lessons
When times certainly has changed
Though our world constantly evolves
Man basically remain the same
We work, we laugh, we love, we cry
And eventually
We all must die

Young boy, young man
My wish for you
Is simple and it's true
That your life be filled with happiness
That you succeed in everything you do
And the secret to success is this
Be passionate and see things through
For you only get to live life once
And tomorrow would never come around twice
Take good care of yourself
Start now
Especially when you are still so young

About this poem

I saw how my youngest son was struggling to make sense of the changes his mind and body was experiencing and still are ,during puberty. No wonder they're dubbed "growing pains". Really painful to witness, so I wrote him a poem
