Sobriety: Not For The Faint of Heart

Sobriety isn’t for the faint of heart
The demons took hold right from the start
They want me to fail and make me believe
That using is what will make me achieve
Achieve happiness and cure all that is bad
But all they do is make me go mad
My emotions are all over the place
I keep taking pills, I’m such a disgrace
A disgrace to this world, ashamed of my past
When will I ever get sober and make it last?
I fight these demons day in and day out
I struggle daily and feel I can’t live without
Without the drugs I feel I’m a useless person
But with every pill I take my health worsens
I slip down the slope and feel I’ll never get sober
When will this battle ever be over?
I try and I try to keep on the path of sobriety
But all that comes with it is intense anxiety
Anxiety that I feel I’ll never overcome
Who in the world have I fucking become?
I take one last pill and hope for the best
Whatever comes next I hope it is rest.

About this poem

I have long struggled with a drug addiction. I have have relapsed many times but I’ve always gotten back up. So far this is one of my better poems I have written.
