Six-Point Visitation

In no hurry
a cloven step with purpose,
then another, delicately
and with precision
through quiet dignity and noble grace
to stop time in its tracks,
prompted me to put down my work.

Through no fear or hesitation,
a heightened presence captured
a visceral moment
glistening in timelessness.
Ears, antennas tuned for messages from beyond
rotated, twitched and filtered with rapt attention.
A curious peer through the
naked branches of the Apple tree
evoked wonder and reverence
for the fleeting of time.
The memories of a golden friendship
re-run across a thirty-minute film
the heart will fondly savor
until we meet again.

About this poem

This poem was inspired by the spontaneous 30 minute visitation of a six-point stag after the passing of my friend Sher Wesch on February 13, 2024. In the twelve years I have lived in this neighborhood, I have never seen a deer.
