All The People

All the rich people laugh and say
That money isn’t all there is to happiness.
All the smart people shake their wise heads
Before pronouncing that intelligence
Can be dangerous.
All the upper-class give a genteel smile as
They claim that society life isn’t all
It’s made out to be, overrated, exaggerated,
Filled with an air of faked politeness.
All the beautiful people wipe the makeup
Off their faces as they chide you on pretenses
Before they waltz off to spray hair gel,
And stick pins into their skin without a wince,
Just another normal day.
All the famous people shake their heads
With weary sighs and closed eyes.
“Not even a moment of peace, fans are
Ever so demanding!” And then they run off
Towards their press conferences with
Plastered smiles glittering in the camera lights.
I laugh and I cry because what am I,
Just another burnt soul in this world set ablaze.
Ash smothers in the distance, somewhere
The sound of bombs echoes in my head.

About this poem

This poem was inspired by my interpretation of a Chinese song (Ask) by 吴垚滔 (Wu Yaotao), particularly of the hypocrisy of society.
