A Dream of Fire and Stone

Lindsay Mayeux 1992 (United States of America)

Ten years to prepare
Ten long years; waiting.
Wait for the sign,
It comes at night,
It blocks out the moon -
A ring of fire -
Its halo -
Is it day
or is it night?

He's coming,
he's here
He comes in confident strides
Pure intent that is anything but
He comes to fight
I can't here, not now,
not with him,
I must go.

Across the dark city
Empty alleyways between
The bleak sound of silence
As people hide, hushed, unseen
They know it's time,
They've seen the sign:
The Fire Dragon is here

Across the city,
I fly, in leaps,
in bounds.
In the distance,
there,
on the shore,
A dragon of red

Far away shouts,
of two-hundred men,
the brass song of metal clanging,
Two-hundred men and women,
turned warriors overnight

Their bravery unmatched,
they are scared, but still they stand
knowing what is right.
It's my turn to join the fight

Landing on the rocky sand,
with a solidifying crunch,
I take my stand,
Here is what I'm supposed to fight.

Drawing bravery from my fellow man
harnessing power,
light,
beacons of fire spring into
It should be hot,
but they only rage
Here comes the end-
a killing blow

With a collective breath,
our energy coming through,
I take the last shot,
its heart - it stops
- at last -
They defeated
their harrowing foe.
