They were singing gaily.

They were singing gaily

I was going through a forest path.
The path was muddy,
covered with dry leaves.
Bowing down trees from two sides,
made the road shadowy.

I was alone.
I was not unmindful.
I stepped slowly
lest I slipped and fell down.
So I was careful.

Suddenly I saw few tribal women
coming in queue.
They balanced the pitchers
on their heads,
singing a song unknown to me.

They were singing gaily.
I was mesmerised,
to see their walking gait.
It was a spectacle to behold.
I was transfixed.

They went away ignoring me.
They went far,
still I could hear their songs.
It seemed to me a swarm of bees,
humming very near.
