Butterflies & Centipedes

Falling in love is a scary thing.
You never notice
 until it's too late.

Water drips and sends ripples,
 some feel like storms of thunder
 and others like waves-
 lapping at your feet.

Your heart begins to beat again-
 well it always beat,
 but you forgot it's rhythm.
And again you listen
 to it's gentle tune.

Around him it beats irregularly,
 fluttering like butterflies in a cage.
The last time this happened
 your heart was broken,
 so now you're never sure
 if the tickled feeling is butterfly wings
 or centipede legs.

So you fear the fluttering.
You wish you could cut open your heart,
 and examine the insect
 that made it's home there.

But you know that you can't,
 so you avoid him
 and mask the feeling.
Then the insects get restless;
 they feel trapped in their little cage,
 and burst forth into the night.

And now it's too late;
 you enjoy the fluttering
 and the tickled feeling.
You're still not sure if it's butterflies or centipedes,
 but you're also not sure if you care.
