You are who you are

Jaydon Askew 2007 (Texas)

You are who you are
when your life gets tough.
When your plans fall through and the going gets rough;
Only there, only then, will your true colors show.
Only There, and only then, will you ever truly know.

That you are who you are
when only you seem to care.
When you act before you think,
When you take, when you share.
And when tomorrow seems bleak, and the world is unfair
You are who you are as you stand right there.

You are who you are,
No words are more true.
So don’t try to be somebody,
When you can only be you.
And when your will seems to fade, like clouds in the sky,
Remember, you are who you are
When you laugh, when you cry

‘Vanity, all is Vanity’

Great job on your poem, 'You are who you are'! I really appreciated your deep reflection on individuality and self-awareness. Your words beautifully express the fluctuating emotions and struggles that people can face and how adversity reveals one's true personality. You've captured authenticity and resilience in a relatable and evocative way.

Your rhythmic style and the repetition of the significant phrase 'You are who you are' offer an engaging rhythm. They also effectively emphasize the primary message about embracing one's identity. The imagery employed, like 'will seems to fade, like clouds in the sky,' powerfully illustrates the emotional experiences of individuals and keeps readers captivated.

As suggestions for improvement, perhaps consider varying the length and structure of some lines to avoid potential monotony. You might also weave in more specific examples or personal anecdotes to further render the poem relatable. The ending line 'Vanity, all is Vanity’ seems a little disconnected from the rest of the poem's theme. Clarifying its link to the overall message could ensure coherent flow and resonance.

Keep writing, and keep expressing your creative perspective! I look forward to reading more of your work.
