A Good Thing
Lawrence S. Pertillar 1947 (Connecticut)
A good thing.
Once to have it had.
Allowing that sweet taste,
To take for granted.
Until the smell becomes unbearable.
Soured to let spoil.
Treated as if garbage.
Thrown away.
And glad someone else,
Knew what it was.
Done to grab a good thing fast.
Knowing for them,
A good thing gone ignored...
It they would or could never think to trash.
Well...
Many who believe a good thing received,
Is easy to rid for something better to get.
Then one day it happens.
As they sit to reminisce,
Wishing back at a time to never forget...
That good thing given,
No one around had but them.
But allowed they did to take for granted,
Others who made them accept to believe...
Nothing given and is easily received,
Is not worth anyone's time...
To feel that happy about it.
Without being suspicious...
Of being deceived.
And they should begin treating,
What was then given to them as if dirt.
With a doing to bring themselves
Back down to Earth.
Like many living lives hoping to find,
Minds to have lost!
'Uh...
I know this may sound as if I am crazy.
But...
What you have use to belong to me.
Do you mind if I ask you,
To return it back?'
'Oh?
And when did that happen?'
'Many years ago.
And I miss the happiness I once had.'
'These days,
What you are saying,
Doesn't sound crazy to me at all.
Trust me,
You are as normal as many others...
Who have been made to believe,
Happiness to have and kept to keep...
Has nothing to do with respect to give it.
And effort endeavored to protect,
What few do to think...
They, and no one else,
Is doing someone a favor just to stay and be...
In their presence.
Now...
Look around.
Over there up and down.
You are hardly alone to have lost your mind.
And what I have to find,
Is mine.
You would have better luck,
Going to a therapist or hiring a detective.'
