Why Now?

Watching the beauty of day
Fade away as the colours blend
From afar i could still hear
The sweet laughter of children
I sat by the khonde
Relieving my dream last night

Fear did grip me as a tree rooted to the ground
I could say no words
As the wind changes course
"John! Mary! come in its going to rain"
Aunt called from the next yard.
Dark it became
And as slow as a gentle breeze
The showers fell
Let us wait for tomorrow.

The phones kept ringing with same question
From the other side we could hear
Hearts quivering in fear
Voices cracking with tears
The misery has just began

Less 8 hours houses returned to dust and cement
Rivers to lakes
Towns to oceans
Cars and homes are no place to stay
Why now?

10 lives at once
Is shocking to the world
It came as little rain
Only for us to know
Freddy will be staying a while

My house is a stream
My siblings could only scream
Wet walls, leaking roofs, will the house fall?
Damaged roads, no school, no lights, no water
Nothing
Did not the Almighty say he will not destroy with waters?
What  now?

The botanic gardens out Chanco
are now a rain forest
How did i escape such disaster?
How did i survive?
Theft in such case increase
Imagine, stealing from the ones that have already lost
What a shame.
I  could blame the devil
But thats just the way of the world
After centuries and centuries
Why bring back that time?
Will it rain for 40 days?
Will there be another Noah's ark?
I still do not understand
Why now?

About this poem

following the natural disaster( cyclone Freddy) that happened in Malawi, March 2023, many had lost lives and many things were damaged. looking at that gave me the opportunity to draft something which expressed my emotion towards it all. why now is a piece that is both touching and questionable.
