A Flicker of Memory

In crawls the break of day
as beaches glitter with the innocence
of a child's eye.

The tide churns ever so slightly
as to lull asleep the blades of grass
that climb honorably to the blue canvas
painting our closest universe.

Hours melt into the bright reflection
of ocean glass smoothed to stone
while minutes gasp their last breath
and accept their extinction.

As an ensuing mist glazes the eyes
of even the busiest soul,
we embrace the warmth
of an old hooded sweatshirt
that once caught rain.

Besides my love for the ocean (and natural bias towards poems that use it as a motif), this poem's beautiful, yet, simplistic imagery invoked every feeling with intention. It's sophisticated in the best way: where every line counts and the structure of the poem leads to a satisfying conclusion that lingers in the reader's heart. There were many entries that used ocean-imagery to invoke certain feelings, but none were as focused and excellently constructed like this one. Although its not the most complex of poems, by virtue of it not overreaching and truly letting the audience connect with the poem, its able to instill the most profound affect on the reader.

I loved this poem very much. Well done and well deserving of a vote!
