For The Promises I Can't Keep

I wake up another day unrefreshed
With more obstacles that delay
With promises I've made to myself and others
And more opportunities to see me fail

When I complete a promise but fail another
It feels like I shouldn't even try
What good am I if I can't keep my word?
I shouldn't even venture outside

Why is it so hard to stay true to myself?
Why do I always end up being wrong?
Happiness seems like an impossibility
This frustration is more than I can take

But I tell myself I must be resilient
To question myself is to surrender
I must thank the heavens I am still here
Because I'm not ready to join the dead

I have so much work to do
Why didn't I ask for help?
However, it's too late for that
And please know I will find a way

About this poem

This about the struggles of my every day life. I have made so many promises that I did not intend on breaking; and yet I have. Failure is unpleasant, but I'll keep on trying and get up. I will try again; then try something else. I am not ready to die. Poetry is the medium that helps me stave off mental illness.

I write poetry and it is often terrible. The poetry I wrote previously was so terrible I decided to take a ten year break. However, it seems the decade I decided to do everything but write poetry has seemingly increased my ability to write half-decent poetry. Life is weird. more…
