What If?

What if it's cancer?
What does that mean?
Is the sky any less blue?
Or the grass any less green?

Does candy taste sweeter?
Are lemons more sour?
Does time go more slowly?
Or is an hour still an hour?

Do people show more compassion?
Do others "know how you feel?"
Is perception still reality?
Or is the pain much more real?

Do people nod understandingly,
When they find out the news?
Or gently pat you on the shoulder,
Because that's all they can do?

Am I supposed to be philosophical,
Living each day like it's the last?
Perhaps impart wisdom to my children -
"Kids, your life will go by so fast!"

Maybe I'll just keep on living,
And trust that God knows the answer.
Because I'm blessed beyond measure,
Even if it's cancer.

About this poem

I'm awaiting results to determine if I have cancer - this poem conveys the unknowns that I've been internalizing about this potentially life-changing diagnosis, while still trusting that I don't have to know all the answers.
