You VS. Me

When I look into the mirror - what do I see?
A lookalike version of You - staring at Me.

Identical in image - but the make up is different,
They’re polar opposites - but both come from within.

See, You is Me, but constructed of all the bad,
Carrying all of life’s trials and tribulations that I’ve ever had.

Every second, every minute, every day, every week,
From the moment I wake - till the moment I sleep.

You is always present and trying to capture attention,
Starving for my time - so he can turn it to tension.

Mentioning things like - "you aren’t good enough,
You aren’t capable,
You are a loser,
You are hateable.

You’ll never amount to much - if any,
Your life is pathetic - and thought this by many..."

As you can tell, You can be harsh,
Metaphorically speaking - like left in the marsh.

That is, of course, if I let You win,
But ya see, Me, has some thoughts as well...

And thoughts to tell, such as "You are worthy,
You are capable,
You are loved,
You aren’t hateable.

You will amount to massive, just give it time,
And ultimately know, it’s all just in your mind."

Whether small as an ant or giant as a glacier,
We are the ones who are grading the paper.

So, what I’m trying to say is …

You control your journey,
You control your legacy,
The results will be splendid,
You just have to listen to Me.

About this poem

I wrote this poem to express the battle that I have with myself - that I know many others share and relate to as well. This comes from a very personal space, but every time I read it, consume it, and digest it, I appreciate it more and more. I hope others find the love within it as I do!

Jordan Harter

Originally from a small city in the center of PA, now living in Pittsburgh, I've always enjoyed writing and finding new, creative ways to express myself. Over the years, however, writing has been the one constant. Although most of my writings and poems tend to be somewhat "deep" or thought provoking, I am a rather laid back and chill individually who loves sports, movies, and music all equally. more…
