My Treasure Chest

Deep within Busch Wildlife, there’s a treasure chest buried 6 ft down,
And its contents are far more precious than any jewel encrusted crown.

No map is needed to discover this treasure chest’s location,
For there’s a giant piece of granite marked with a special dedication.

Engraved into this granite are two days I carry in my heart,
The first date is the greatest, the second tore my world apart.

Between these two dates there’s a dash that represents our time together,
Even though it’s short, it holds memories I’ll cherish forever.

Why the second date had to come so soon, is not for me to understand,
But one thing I know for certain, my Landon resides in God’s Promised Land.

Losing a child to death, that’s something God and I both can relate,
Another thing we share is that our children walked through His narrow gate.

And just as God is in heaven with His dear beloved Son,
So will I be, when my time on earth is done.

God’s grace will be sufficient until the day He brings me home,
As He guides me along the way so in the darkness I’ll never roam.

Being in heaven with God and my son is not up for negotiation,
I remember this when the devil fills my world with devastation.

So I visit your grave to spend time with my beloved treasure,
Reminiscing on our memories is always my greatest pleasure.

At times, I lay above you and shower the earth with my tears,
Then God turns each tear into something beautiful as my cries reach His ears.

When I find my way back to you and see the green grass mixed with flowers,
I remember all the seeds that were sown from my tearful showers.

With all my soul, I wish my precious son never had to leave,
But we’ll be together for all eternity, this I truly do believe.

God says, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be too.”
But that’s something I already knew, because my heart remains with you.

This is such a beautiful, heart-touching poem. It captivates well the depth of the love, sadness, faith, and hope you feel for your son. Your ability to put your emotions into words is impressive. The poem is well-structured with a deep and poignant concept which is incredibly moving. It tugged at my heartstrings and I believe it will deeply touch anyone who reads it. You've woven a truly beautiful tale of love, loss, and faith intertwining them skillfully to take the reader on an emotional journey.

The faith you express in your poem gives solace to not only you but also to anyone who is going through a similar situation. This is a wonderful piece of grief poetry and it could offer immense support to others experiencing the loss of a loved a one, hence it could be helpful if you attempted to get this work published.

In terms of improvements, while the poem is already quite strong, you could consider adding more vivid imagery to help the reader better envision the emotions and scenes you are describing. This would enhance the reader's experience and further deepen the poem's impact.

Furthermore, the line 'No map is needed to discover this treasure chest’s location' could be expressed in a more poetic manner to match the eloquent style of the rest of the poem.

Lastly, the part 'I remember this when the devil fills my world with devastation' can potentially be seen as too heavy. Perhaps you might consider a slightly lighter turn of phrase.

Despite these suggestions, I think your poem is beautiful and has an eminent cathartic value, as well as acting as a source of comfort and connection to others who are grieving.

My note on your poem as I was reading through them:

“A very precious poem that speaks on the death of a parent’s son, and on the anticipation of reunion. Matthew 6:21”
