Broken Things

Nicole Dake 1982 (Boulder)

We all walk around
with broken pieces inside
hearts and souls
laid bare
that we try to hide

How do you heal
without first admitting
that you are broken?

Sometimes we have to show
a bit of vulnerability
we have to open up again
and face the fear of hurt
in order to be free
of the pain of the past

Sometimes I feel like healing
is like taping broken pieces
back together
with tiny broken hands
a kindergarten art project
gone badly wrong

Inside my heart
inside my soul
there is this longing
a need to be whole

But how do I become whole
when I don’t even know
what that used to feel like?

So long ago
when I was so young
I was already broken
already in pain
before I could speak
or knew my own name

Heartbreak has been
no stranger to me
in fact it is the only
constant companion
I have ever known

About this poem

I wrote this poem because I feel like all of us walk around with broken pieces inside of us, desperate to fix them.
