A Sudden Morning

I woke up crying today
and I'm not sure why.
Maybe it's the turning
of the seasons,
or the condensation of a year.
Or perhaps, there's just no reason
I think maybe
that's my greatest fear.

I feel not unlike
the waning autumn leaves
Who
, in falling to the ground,
are victimed
by the changing of the world around.

And I imagine
that they too
are crying,
In their own
imperceivable
ways of existing

About this poem

This poem I'm my attempt at expressing the quiet type of sadness that can sometimes arise from the routine passing of time. I hope to convey the existential feeling of pain without meaning and how that can affect our sense of agency.

I love that you used the word ‘existential’ in your comment about your poem. I took notes on most of the August poems and here was mine for this one:

“The anxiety that most people feel usually has an object associated with it: unpaid bills, an upcoming test, a date. There is an anxiety that many people have felt which does not have an object associated with it, which is vague and usually comes out of nowhere: existential anxiety. Reading this poem made me think of this. I love how the poet wonders if changes in the external world are somehow inadvertently imposing changes on him or herself (cleverly comparing their dilemma with that of leaves whose alterations are the result of autumn’s advent).”

Thank you so much for your feedback. I'm glad to know my poem was able to resonate with someone other than myself lol.
