Sacrifice in Scarlet

A city ablaze with sunset fire and crumbled ash,
At her feet laid heaving helpless heavy gasps.
Each surface reflecting a dying sun,
Tiny grains of light fading and melting as one.
What a shame to never see this sight again,
Through bloodied gritted teeth and tightened grin.

Scarlet dripping hands rake scarlet knotted hair,
First time for languished lungs to lap free air.
Corpses warm cast out in dirt
Newly severed hearts, entrails from bodies who hurt.
Relief sparks from freedom won,
The battle is over, a victory song.

“Comrades,” she called out,
A sea of blood and gore cannot shout.
Lifeless fell bodies of her enemy’s kin,
But woe to fallen bodies of her own men.
Alone she held her post no one I sight.
The only one standing.
The only one left.
