Elixir
Charles Fields II 1955 (Fort Bragg, NC)
Distilled from all the hopes and dreams
combined
Whose branches entwined
produce a fruit superb
Picked from the finest grapes,
tended to its prime
A taste felt lightly on the palate…
in ways sublime
With a hint of pain and sorrow,
senses primed
With a hint of bitterness,
as if by design
Now recollections of many past lines,
combined
Its essence
seasoning the perfect vintage,
aligned
Our lips taste the tart notes
of its potent drift
A touch of forgetfulness,
altered remembrances,
The art of bending time
chasing its elusive gift
With sweetness of dreams
laced by means
Of gentle memories
blended into its wine
